This October, we’re taking it back to where it all started—to the beautiful country of Costa Rica that hosted the first-ever A-fest event back in 2010.

Costa Rica is one of the world’s most popular eco-tourism destinations with diverse and exotic geographical features including national parks, rainforests, volcanoes, waterfalls, tropical beaches, unparalleled wildlife and endless options for recreation.

With sun-splashed beaches and great Pacific surf, Costa Rica’s northwestern province of Guanacaste attracts visitors from around the globe drawn to its unspoiled natural beauty and serenity. As one of the most popular provinces in the country, Guanacaste has gained a name for itself as a tropical paradise with pristine shorelines, beautiful mountain ranges and a number of volcanoes.

The venue for the event is located in the beautiful and remote Playa Conchal, a white-sand beach composed of millions of tiny crusted shells where the sparking turquoise water is always a comfortable temperature for swimming, snorkeling or surfing.

We’ve listed the most common questions and answers about A-fest, which will give you more information on what’s happening at the event and important info to know.

What airport should I fly into?
The nearest major airport is Liberia International Airport (LIR), officially named Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport which is supported by direct flights from various cities in the US. Westin Playa Conchal is 45 minutes (60km) from Liberia airport and taxis are readily available. We will provide the Afest group with more details about ground transport options.

The alternative (and possibly less expensive option) is to fly into Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose and take a domestic flight either to Liberia Airport or local Tamarindo airport (15 minutes from Westin) or a 4 hour car or bus trip to Guanacaste. Here’s a website of a local airline company providing frequent flights from San Jose to Liberia and Tamarindo airports. Please note that many of the planes used for these domestic flights are small passenger planes for 8-10 people.

How can I book a room at the hotel?
We’d blocked a number of rooms for Afest group at Westin Playa Conchal Resort, where the event is taking place. We’ve just received an update from the hotel that all the rooms that were specifically allocated for Afest have sold out. But, not to worry! We have some great options for you to consider in order to book your room, including a special rate at the next door property (starting from $132 per room per night) that’s a 5 minute walk away. More details will be shared after you purchase your ticket.

What’s included in the cost of the ticket?

What is NOT included in the cost of the ticket?
Flights and hotel accommodation are not included in the ticket price. After purchasing your event ticket, you will receive info on how to book your hotel room at a special discounted rate at the Westin Playa Conchal Resort for $159 per person per night in a shared double room or $239 per person per night in a single room (non-shared).

Is there Wi-Fi?
Wifi is provided complimentary in rooms and throughout the hotel.

I need a roomie. What should I do?
We’ve got you covered! You’ll be able to share your dates and preferences in a special document in our Facebook group and connect with people with the same preferences after you’ve purchased your ticket.

There will be several keynote speakers delivering content-rich 1-hour presentations. The remaining speakers will conduct TED-style succinct 20 minute talks that share powerful and ground-breaking ideas.

How can I apply to be a speaker?
We’re happy to hear you’re keen on being a speaker! We have an application process for all interested speakers and give high preference to speakers who are established or can share links to previous presentations of their proposed topics.

As stated on the speaker application page, you’ll see that only the cost of the Afest ticket will be waived, but accommodation and travel are still one’s responsibility as Afest is a non-profit event.

Do I have to be an entrepreneur to fit in at Awesomeness Fest?
While the majority of our attendees do have a business, we also have attendees who hold senior positions in their company, work for NGOs or are looking to make the leap to becoming an entrepreneur, or even an author or an artist. What’s important is to have BIG goals and dreams for yourself and the impact you have on others, a positive and open attitude and a take-action mentality.

When should I fly in and out?
Afest is a jam-packed four days event running from Thursday, October 22- Sunday, October 25. We recommend arriving on Wednesday, October 21 as there is a special, complimentary pre-Afest workshop with Lisa Nichols from 2-6PM that afternoon. Afest starts on Thursday afternoon, October 22 with registration at 10AM and the official program kicking off at 2PM. Also, every Afest ends with a special closing event on the final evening so we strongly advise you check out on Monday, October 26 so that you can join us for the final evening activities on the 25th.

What’s the start and end time each day?
The event starts at 10AM sharp and ends around 6PM. However, we also have optional morning activities and evening events planned, so don’t make any plans for the evenings because you can expect a lot of fun from early in the morning until well into the night! For all off-site evening events, we’ll have an early and late departure so you can choose which works best for you.

How much free time can I expect?
The short answer is very little. You’ll have an hour or so after each day to relax, eat, meditate, shower, etc. before the evening events begin. Of course, it’s completely optional whether you’d like to attend or not, but we can assure you, you don’t want to miss out. We have some amazing experiences planned that are included in the event ticket price. If you’re looking for more free time, we recommend arriving early or leaving a few days after.

How can I get a ticket?
All you need to do to secure your spot at Awesomeness Fest Costa Rica is to apply here. Our team will review your application as fast as they can. If all goes well, you’ll be able to buy your ticket immediately. Please note that due to the overwhelming interest in attending Afest, we’re not be able to approve everyone who applies. Last year, we had nearly 3,000 people apply for 500 spots.

How much are the tickets?
A ticket to Awesomeness Fest Costa Rica includes 4 days of speakers, amazing networking opportunities, epic parties and excursions and a few other surprises. Tickets start at around $1795 and go up to $2395. It is a tiered pricing structure so ticket prices increase by around $100 every 30 tickets sold. Aside from the event ticket, attendees will be responsible for covering their airfare and accommodation. The rooms cost $159 per night per person for a shared double room and $239 per night for a single room. The rates are all inclusive and include all the meals, beverages, taxes and gratuities.

Note: Awesomeness Fest also donates its proceeds to global and innovative causes. Past beneficiaries have included Patricia Arquette’s GiveLove, dedicated to improving global sanitation; Lynne Twist’s Pachamama Alliance, a foundation that helps preserve over 8 million acres of rainforest in the Ecuadorian Amazon; and Tiffany Person’s Shine on Sierra Leone, which is dedicated to creating local sustainable programs to promote thriving self-sufficent communities. Since 2014, Awesomeness Fest has been donating $150,000 to the X-Prize Foundation, whose mission is to use incentivized prize competitions to help bring about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity.

Can I bring my children? How much are the junior tickets?
Awesomeness Fest is family friendly; we welcome children of all ages. We’ve even had attendees bring their newborn. Children 12 and under get to attend for free, children 13-17 get a discounted ticket, and those aged 18 and up require a full price ticket. If you’ve had a successful interview, you can register your child(ren) immediately. Simply send an email to support@awesomenessfest.com.

Can I bring my spouse to the event?
Yes, of course. Attendees are welcome to invite their spouse to the event. If you’ve had a successful interview, your spouse can register immediately at the current ticket price. Simply send us an email to support@awesomenessfest.com.

Do you have a refund policy?
Yes! In the event something comes up and you can’t make it, Awesomeness Fest allows a 100% refund up to 8 weeks (August 21) before the event, and a 50% refund up to 6 weeks (Septemeber 8) before the event. If you’re unable to attend, you can transfer your ticket to another Awesomeness Fest event, or send a family member or business parter/associate in your place, provided they qualify. All transfer requests must be made at least 4 weeks (September 21) prior to the event, can be transferred only once and are non-refundable. Should you need to transfer your event ticket to another Awesomeness Fest event, additional fees may apply depending on location and tiered ticket pricing. Please note, tickets are not for resale.

What if I’m not ready for Awesomeness Fest yet, and would like to try out for the next one?
If you want to join Awesomeness Fest and feel you’re a good fit, go ahead and apply! We’ve received testimonials from previous attendees who have had hesitations for different reasons on whether to attend only to end up saying it was one of the best decisions and experiences of their lives. Packing Guide

What is the dress code?
This is a totally flip-flop friendly event! During the day, you’ll want to wear something comfy and casual. Something you can move in! In the evening, pretty much anything goes. Dresses, jeans…it’s up to you! Ladies, there isn’t a need to pack your super high heels and gentleman, leave your shiny dress shoes at home – you need to save room for your party costumes! What should I bring with me?
Don’t worry, we will prepare a separate packing guide for your convenience. The most important thing is a positive attitude and the willingness to have a lot of fun! As always we’ll have epic theme parties happening at Afest and we’ll make sure to let you know what costume you should bring with you.

Important To Know

Here’s everything you need to know to help you plan your trip to Awesomeness Fest in Costa Rica.
  • Citizens of the U.S., the U.K., EU countries, Australia and New Zealand do not need visas to visit Costa Rica. For other countries, please check the Costa Rica Ministry of Tourism for the full list of countries that require a visa to travel to Costa Rica.
  • Electrical Standard is 110-120 Volts. Wall sockets are American-style with a ground (two prong plugs or three prong if grounded). Travelers from North America will typically not need a converter or adaptor. Those of you from Europe or other continents, will need adapters and it is recommended that you bring your own, but you can usually buy these in the hotel shop.
  • October is a green season in Guanacasta meaning that you can excpect sunny mornings with tropical showers in the afternoon with an average temperature high of 87/89°F (31/32°C).
  • Spanish is the official language and this is what is primarily spoken. English is widely spoken as well.
  • The local currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC) and currency exchange centers are readily available. US Dollars are also accepted in many places. Taking your “home” currency (Euros, UK Pounds or U.S. Dollars) to Costa Rica and changing it there will not result in any problems – all are easy to exchange for colón in the country, although other currencies can of course be changed too. If your home currency is something other than these three, and you’d like to play it safe, the best currency to take to Costa Rica is US Dollars.
  • Costa Rica is in the Central Standard Time Zone CST or UTC/GMT -6 hours.
  • Vaccinations are not required but if you’d like to take some extra precautions, please reference this here for more information.
